A VISIT FROM St. NICHOLAS
The Night Before Christmas
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
それはクリスマスの前の晩 静かな静かな家の中
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
何も動かぬ真夜中は 小ネズミだって夢の中
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
くつしたはきちんと暖炉に用意され
In hopes that ST. NICHOLAS soon would be there;
あとはセント・ニコラスを待つばかり
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
こどもたちは ふわふわベッドで寝息をたてて
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
夢に舞うのは きらきらこんぺい糖
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
母さんはネッカチーフ 父さんはナイト・キャップ
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
頭に巻いて さあひとねむり
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
すると芝生の方で カチャカチャ、カチャカチャ
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
何だろうと ベッドから飛び出し
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
稲妻みたいに 窓まで行って
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
よろい戸こじあけ 窓枠上げた
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
月は ふんわりつもった雪を照らし
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
辺りは 真昼のような銀白色だ
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
そこで見たものは ほんとに目をこすりたくなったよ
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
八頭のちっちゃなトナカイが ちっちゃな橇ひいて
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
橇の主は 元気一杯のおじいさん
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
すぐさま父さんは分かったさ それがセント・ニックその人だって
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
橇は鷲よりすばやく降りて来た
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
口笛がして トナカイを呼ぶ声が聞こえた
"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
「さあ、ダッシャー！ダンサー！プランサー！ヴィクセン！
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONDER and BLITZEN!
そら、コメット！キューピド！ドンダー！ブリッツェン！
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
ポーチの上までだよ！壁のてっぺんまで！
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
がんばれ！みんな！がんばれ！」
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
突風の前の枯葉みたいに
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
邪魔物があったら ふわりと空中に浮き上がり
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
トナカイたちは 見事家の屋根にまでたどりついた
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
おもちゃをいっぱい積んだ橇に セント・ニコラスを乗せて
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
すぐさま屋根に気配がした
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
ひずめで引っかくカチャカチャいう音
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
父さんが手をひっこめて 振り向く隙に
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
煙突から セント・ニコラスが到着した
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
頭からつま先まで 毛皮にくるまり
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
着ているものは 煤や灰でよごれていたけど
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
おもちゃの束を 背中に揺らせ
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
店をひろげようとしてる行商人みたい
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
瞳はキラキラきらめき とってもかわいいえくぼをして！
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
頬はバラのように赤く まるでさくらんぼなお鼻！
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
おどけたお口は にこにこ笑って
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
顎のひげは もう雪のようにまっ白
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
口にくわえたパイプから
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
煙がふわぁって立ち昇り 頭のまわりに輪を作る
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
まるいお顔 ちょっぴり出てるお腹
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
笑うと それがおっきなゼリーみたいに揺れるのさ
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
ぽっちゃりした 愉快な妖精そのものの姿
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
それを見たとたん 父さん思わず吹き出しちゃった
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
ニックはウインクして 鼻に皺を寄せた
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
それで父さんは 恐わい気持ちなど吹き飛んだよ
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
それからだまって 仕事にかかり
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
くつしたをいっぱいにすると くるっと振り返って
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
お鼻の横に指を立てて見せ
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
ちょっとうなずくと 煙突をすうっと昇ってしまった
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
そりに飛び乗り トナカイたちに口笛を吹き
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
そのまま飛んで行ったのさ アザミの綿帽子みたいに
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
でも 見えなくなる前にこう言うのが聞こえたよ
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT."
「クリスマスおめでとう、みんな さあ、ぐっすりおやすみ」
ムーアの原詩はすべて２行ずつ韻を踏んでいて、その素晴らしさに驚嘆します。対訳では、なかなか表現しきれないので是非、英詩で楽しんでください。
この詩の中でSt. NICHOLASが一頭ずつトナカイたちの名前を読み上げているところがありますが、その中に入っていないトナカイのことを歌ったのが、『赤鼻のトナカイ』です。
イントロの部分でムーアの詩に出てくるトナカイの名前を歌い、その後にルドルフを紹介する心憎い演出。でもそう思えるためには、まず、このムーアのA VISIT FROM St. NICHOLAS～The Night Before Christmasの詩を知ってたらより楽しめますね！
