4-H/Labo Cultural Exchange Program
It has been my pleasure to host Yoko Tani, one of the Labo tutors visiting Virginia from July 22-August 4, 2002.
This has been my second time hosting someone from another coutry and the rewards are immeasurable. The cultural exchange program has provided me and my family an opportunity to catch a glimpse of a place far from home and to share our state of Virginia and the surrounding sights of Washington, D.C.
It has also helped me to have a better understanding of the alliance that 4-H and Labo have had for 31 years. Friendship occurs at every age and I now have a friend from Japan for life?
Yoko and I have very similar iterests, our love of children, teaching and an interest in playing tennis. So, our time together was interesting, educational and fun. I certainly learned a lot from my experience hosting and would consider doing it again in the future.
The program is a great one, and from what I understand from Yoko, the children are also having a good time too. Experiencing life in a different country gives a person an education you cannot get from reading a book.
Real life experience is a great teacher and a wonderful way to learn. So, the opportunity to live in a defferent country for one month is great. This whole experience has also given me an opportunity to reacquaint myself with my own state and to reconnect with the meaningful history that is so impportant to my own country.
Showing Yoko the sights of Washington, D.C., the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, and more has given me an opportunity to visit places that I otherwise may not have visited.
I hope the 4-H/Labo program coutinues for a long time to come.
Sincerely, Donna K. Bacas
