3月20日、ラボ国際交流40周年を記念した
日比谷公会堂での国際交流の集いは中止になりましたけど
その時に来賓としてご挨拶するはずだった
3人の方たちからのメッセージをご紹介。

おはようございます。
Thank you for your invitation to be a part of your 2011 LABO inaugural ceremony.
It is an honor and a privilege to be with you today.
Congratulations on LABO's 40th anniversary of international exchanges.
Through the vision and dedicated leadership of LABO,
many of you will soon be living a life changing summer experience.
２０１１年ラボ国際交流のつどいにお招きいただきありがとうございます。
とりわけ今年は国際交流開始４０周年という記念の年を
みなさんと共に祝うことができ、大変光栄に思っております。
この夏多くのみなさんが、ラボの国際交流に参加することで、
みなさんの人生を大きく変えるような体験をされることでしょう。
I would like to share with you
my perspectives on international exchanges
from several different points of reference.
The first, as an exchange delegate,
secondly as a group chaperone,
thirdly as the coordinator for the LABO exchange program in South Dakota, USA,
and finally as looking to the future of international exchanges.
まずは、私の体験から国際交流についてみなさんにお話しをしたいと思います。
第一に国際交流に参加した体験者として、
次にグループを引率した引率者として、
またアメリカ・サウスダコタ州のラボ国際交流プログラム・コーディネーターとして、
そしてこの国際交流プログラムの将来についてお話ししたいと思います。
I was a six month exchange delegate to West Germany in 1980.
Living with seven different families for three weeks
each in seven different states around the country,
I certainly was able to get a broader understanding of cultural differences.
Early in my trip, I vividly recall asking myself,
"What have I gotten myself into?"
I had difficulty speaking the native language,
and communicated with my host family primarily with photos,
simple gestures and words.
My host mother understood this was a unique experience for everyone,
and said it would be best if I would try to speak more,
even though I would make mistakes.
She was absolutely right.
Many things can be communicated with just a couple of words,
not necessarily a whole sentence.
私は1980年西ドイツに６ケ月滞在しました。
３週間おきに、７つの州の７つの家庭でのホームステイ体験で
私は、確かに異文化に対する理解を深めることができました。
今でもホームステイ当初の、「いったい自分にできることは何だろう」
と常に自問していた自分の姿を鮮明に思い出すことができます。
ドイツ語はあまりできなかったので、
ホストファミリィとは写真や簡単な単語とジェスチャーで
コミュニケーションを取っていました。
ホストマザーは私を受入れることはみんなにとって素晴らしい体験だけど、
間違いを恐れず、進んでドイツ語を使えば
最高の体験になるとはずと教えてくれました。
ホストマザーは本当に正しかったのです。
なぜかと言えば、大概のことは、完全な文になっていなくても、
いくつかの単語で言い表すことができるからです。
I was also a group chaperone
to The Netherlands and twice to Australia.
A chaperone has multiple roles.
The delegates rely on the chaperone for many things,
ranging from logistical details to helping with cultural differences
and emotional challenges.
The chaperone will have a host family experience as well.
A chaperone must look after the needs of each individual
in the group as well as have a great experience themselves.
引率者としてはオランダとオーストラリアへ行きましたが、
引率者にはたくさんの役割があります。
参加者からは実務的な質問を始め、
文化の違に対する戸惑いやその他の悩みなど、
参加者が抱えるさまざまな相談にのらなければなりません。
そして引率者自身もホームステイを体験します。
引率者にとって、自分もひとりのホームステイ体験者として、
素晴らしい経験をしなければならないのはもちろんですが、
参加者一人ひとりのサポートは必須となっています。
As the state coordinator for the LABO exchange program to South Dakota, USA
since 2003.
I now have many different responsibilities
than being a chaperone or a delegate.
The results of each state coordinator's efforts are shown
in your faces as you live with your host family.
Host families are very excited to host you.
They know that this experience will be different for both you and them.
Do not be shy. Smile.
Take part in as many activities as possible.
Host families want you to have a great experience.
You will do things you have never done before.
Simple word phrases, smiles, gestures and interaction are important.
Do not let language become a barrier to a great summer experience.
２００３年から、アメリカ・サウスダコタ州４－Ｈで、
ラボ国際交流プログラムのコーディネーターをしていますが、
コーディネーターには参加者や引率者とは違った責任があります。
私たちコーディネーターの努力は、
まさにみなさんの表情に表れるといっても過言ではありません。
なぜなら、ホストファミリィと一緒に過ごすのはみなさん自身だからです。
ホストファミリィはみなさんとともに素晴らしい経験をしたいと願っています。
もちろん、自分たちの体験とみなさんの体験とは異なるものだとはわかっていますが、
ホームステイが始まったら、ぜひ恥ずかしがらずに、
笑顔を忘れず、できるだけたくさんのことを見つけ挑戦してください。
ホストファミリィは、みなさんによりよい体験をして欲しいのです。
日本では経験したことのないことも体験するでしょう。
大切なことは、簡単な英単語と笑顔とジェスチャー、
そして自分から行動を起こすことなのです。
“英語ができない”ことをあまり気にしないでください。
そうすればひと夏の素晴らしい体験がみなさんを待っています。

Thank you for this opportunity to send a message on the occasion of the 2011 Labo
International Exchange Inauguration Ceremony.
2011年「ラボ国際交流のつどい」に向け、
メッセージを贈る機会をいただけましたことに、大変感謝申し上げます。
On behalf of the Australia-Japan Foundation
it is my pleasure to congratulate all the participants of this year’s program.
For those of you who will be travelling to Australia
I encourage you to explore our rich and diversed society,
including Australian indigenous culture
as well as the many restaurants, leisure, sports activities
and nature that Australians enjoy.
豪日交流基金を代表して、
今年国際交流へ参加されるみなさんにお祝い申し上げたいと思います。
オーストラリアを訪問されるみなさんには、
オーストラリア人が日ごろ楽しんでいるたくさんのレストラン、
レジャー、スポーツ活動や自然とともに、
オーストラリア固有の先住民の文化を含む、
豊かで多様なオーストラリア社会を深く体験されるよう強くお勧めいたします。
Australia and Japan enjoy
an extremely strong and vibrant friendship on a multitude
of levels.
It is a friendship that has been greatly supported through
activities such as the Labo International Exchange Program.
Labo International Exchange Foundation shows great foresight
in their continuation of this important program.
Their contribution to the promotion of
mutual understanding and forging links
between the next generations of leaders
around the world is to be commended.
オーストラリアと日本の両国間では、
非常に強固で力強い友好関係が築かれております。
それは一重に、ラボ国際交流プログラムのような交流活動によって
支えられていると言っても過言ではありません。
（財）ラボ国際交流センターは、この重要な交流プログラムを継続することによって、
その素晴らしい先見性を示していると言えるでしょう。
そして、世界の中の次世代を担うリーダーたちの相互理解と、

May you all enjoy the trip of a lifetime
and we hope that experience you will gain
through the program would lead to greater connections between young Australian and

Konnichiwa' and Greetings, I am Tom Ingeberg, President of the Canadian Japanese Exchange Association and I live in the province of British Columbia in Canada.
こんにちは！
カナダ、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州から参りました、
日本・カナダ青少年交流委員会の議長をしておりますトム・インゲバーグです。
It is a great honour to be invited to your beautiful country
for Labo's 40th Anniversary celebration and
to hold our annual Canadian Japanese Exchange Conference.
Over the years the Canadian Coordinators have developed
many friendships with Labo staff, Tutors and the exchange students' families.
ラボ国際交流４０周年の記念の年に、
美しい日本で日加合同会が開催できること、
また国際交流のつどいにもお招きいただき、
大変光栄に思っております。長年にわたって、
我々カナダコーディネーターは、ラボのスタッフや、テューター、
そして参加者とその家族と友情を育んでまいりました。
As those of you who have visited various parts of Canada know,
we have a very immense, diverse and multicultural country. Canada covers a large area of land,
with more than 9.9 million square kilometers
and enjoy access to beaches on three oceans,
but one of those beaches is probably too cold for a bathing suit.....
The land varies from semi-arid desert to temperate rain forests;
from prairie and farm land to forest, rocks and lakes;
and from sea level to 6000 meter high mountains.
We have the most fresh water lakes in the world,
with many of our lakes being larger than some inland seas.
Canada is a very new country at about 144 years old.
Because we are so new, our population is very small.
The Tokyo Urban area population is over 35 million people
which is greater than all of Canada.
Because Canada is so large,
it would take days to travel by car from one coast to another,
thus we rely on air travel, which is often very expensive.
We do not enjoy the benefits of a high speed train system like Japan has
because it is just too expensive for Canada to build one
to cover such a large distance.
カナダを訪れた方々はご存知だと思いますが、
私たちの国は大変多彩で多様な文化が共存した国家です。
広さに老いてお話しますと、９９０万平方キロメートルの広大な土地、
そして３つの海にあるビーチをたのしむこともできます。
…と言ってもその中の一つは、泳ぐには少し冷たすぎる海岸ですが
…カナダには半乾燥地帯の砂漠もあれば温暖な雨の多い地域もあります。
大草原や農場は、森林、岩ばかりの土地、そして湖へと続きます。
カナダの土地の高さに目をやると、
海抜ゼロメートルから６０００メートルまでにもなります。
カナダは世界で最も多く淡水湖を有しており、
その中には世界の中の内海よりも、大きなものもいくつもあります。
カナダは建国後１４４年しか経っていない新しい国です。
人口も多くはありません。
日本の首都圏の人口は３５００万人ですから、
カナダ一国の人口よりも多いことになります。
カナダは大変広大なため、車で横断するには何日もかかり、
移動手段は主に飛行機が中心です。高速鉄道を建設しようとしても、
日本とは異なりあまりの広大さに無理があるのです。
While this is your 40th Anniversary,
we Canadians have only had the pleasure of participating
in Labo exchanges for 20 years.
It started in 1991, when Yamada-san and Barney Levenspiel
introduced Murray and Doreen Coolidge from Saskatchewan,
to your program.
That year, (add: "in Saskatchewan".)
They started with several students and the next year,
brought Ellen and Niels Bonde from Alberta into the program.
British Columbia, Ontario and the Maritime provinces
became involved a few years later.
ラボの国際交流は今年４０周年を迎えましたが、
カナダとラボとの交流も幸いにして２０年が経ちました。
１９９１年、その当時のラボ国際交流センターのスタッフだった
山田さんとバーニー・レーベンスピールさんが、
カナダ中西部のサスカチュワン州のコーディネーターのムーリーと
ドリーン・クーリッジに出会い、その年にサスカチュワンで、
この国際交流プログラムが数人のラボっ子の受入れから始まりました。
次の年には隣りのアルバータ州のコーディネーター、エレンとニールス・ボンディも
交流を開始しました。
やがて数年後には、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州、オンタリオ州、
そしてカナダ東部諸州へとラボの交流は広がっていったのです。
Since that time we have had the pleasure of
more than 1,800 Tutors and students visiting Canada,
with many friendships resulting from this.
Our host families have treated your children as their own
and have had many exciting experiences with them.
They have gone on horse camping vacations,
yachting experiences and road trips,
where they have seen so much of Canada.
Many have had the experience of helping with various animals,
from large cows, horses and llamas,
to smaller animals such as pigs, rabbits, ducks, and yes, even pet mice.
Children who start out as very timid visitors,
usually become excited and wiser students by their return home to Japan.
Many tears are shed upon their leaving.
それ以来、１８００人を超えるラボ・テューターとラボっこ参加者がカナダを訪れ、
現在まで友情を育んでいます。
どの受入れ家庭もみなさんのお子さんを自分たちの子どもとして受入れ、
心躍る体験をしているのです。
乗馬キャンプやヨット体験、
ドライブでの旅行では、カナダの様々な風景を見てきたことでしょう。
また、多くの参加者が、大きなものは牛や馬やラマ、
小さいものは豚やうさぎ、アヒル、もちろんペットのねずみにいたるまで、
世話をしたことでしょう。
とても内気で緊張していた子どもたちは、
日本へ戻る頃にはとても生き生きとして、
聡明な少年、少女に成長しています。別れのときはいつも多くの涙が流されています。
After hearing about Japan, and its life,
many of our young people are eager to go to Japan to visit on a homestay.
Since our first students in 1991,
we have had over 250 young adults and chaperones visit Japan.
They, like the Japanese children, have also gained self confidence,
maturity, and awareness of other cultures.
Some exchange families are still communicating many years
after their first visit.
私たちの国の若者も、
日本や日本文化について見聞きしたことにより、
日本への憧れをもちホームステイへ参加しています。
１９９１年以来、２５０人を超える青少年と引率者が
日本へのホームステイを果たしました。
彼らもまた日本から訪れた若者同様、
自信と成長、また他国の文化に対する敬意を獲得しています。
そして今も多くの家族が交流を続けています。
We believe the homestay program
is the best way to learn about other cultures.
We look forward to continuing the exchange partnership
with Labo for many years to come.
私たちは、ホームステイ交流こそが
他国の文化を学ぶ絶好の機会であると信じています。
これからも私たちの国際交流プログラムが末永く長く続くことを願い、
また楽しみにしたいと思います。
