Since I’m leaving here to study in university, I’ll have less opportunity to talk with you. So today, I’d like to give you some advice, including my own experience as a senior in LABO.
First of all, what have I learned through LABO activities for ten years or so? To tell you the truth, I can’t answer this question. Because I have been “Labokko” since I was in 2nd grade and until 11th grade, I cannot possibly imagine what I would have become like without LABO. But, I can tell you one thing: I’m interested in English now, and I’d like to work in some other foreign countries in the future. I reckon these my interests probably come from LABO experiences of mine.
Doing LABO activities, I often thought, and still think, LABO is very weird. It’s not study, but not just playing either. Vague, I think. And because it’s vague, we learn English vaguely in LABO. We don’t “study” English, not like we do at school, but we “feel” it through our sense, and understand what sort of stuff English is.
I think languages, not just English, are like enormous forest. If you try to memorize all the names of the flowers and plants at one time, you can’t enjoy their beauty. First, you should feel it through your own sense, and enjoy it. Getting knowledge is next stuff.
And, another thing I want to tell you is, sometimes we need to struggle. There is a thing you’ll never be able to learn when you’re just having fun. I know memorizing English for theme activities is not easy, but as you do so, you can “feel” it, and polish your sense. So keep working hard!
And last of all, you’ll never know it until you try it. Human is not clever enough to understand it without experiencing it. If it’s fun for you, it’ll be wonderful memory. Even if it’s not fun for you, you’ll learn something through it. In LABO, you can try homestay and study-abroad programs, senior activities, and so on. Don’t decide you don’t need it before trying. It might be completely different experience from what you imagine.
As I conclude this speech, I’d like to give you one message, quoted from the speech by university professor. “Boys, be ambitious!!”
“ Boys, be ambitious !” 「
