鏡の国のアリス 第７章“獅子と一角獣”より
"It would have to be a very tiny earthquake!" thought Alice.
"Who are at it again?" she ven- tured to ask.
"Why, the Lion and the Unicorn, of course," said the King.
"Fighting for the crown?"
"Yes, to be sure," said the King:
"and the best of the joke is, that it's my crown all the while!
Let's run and see them." And they trotted off,
Alice repeating to herself, as she ran, the words of the old song:---
"The Lion and the Unicorn were fighting for the crown:
The Lion beat the Unicorn all round the town .
Some gave them white bread, some gave them brown:
Some gave them plum-cake and drummed them out of town."
"Does---the one---that wins---get the crown?" she asked,
as well as she could, for the run was putting her quite out of breath.
「ずいぶん小さな地震だったのねえ！」とアリスは思いましたが、
勇気を出してきいてみました。「あいつらってだれですか？」
「だれって、ライオンと一角獣（ユニコーン）に決まっとろうが」と王さま。
「王冠めぐって大げんか、ですか？」
「そうとも、まったくそのとおり。
そしてこいつの何とも言えんオチはだな、
その王冠が、結局ずっとわしのものだってことなんだよ！
ちょいと出かけて見物してやろう」と王さま。
そして一同は、トコトコとかけだし、アリスは走りながら、
あの古い歌の歌詞を頭のなかでくりかえしていたのでした――
「ライオンと一角獣（ユニコーン）王冠めぐって大げんか
一角獣（ユニコーン）はライオンに街中随所（ずいしょ）でボコボコに
両者に白パンやる人や黒パンあげる人もおり
すももケーキをあげる人もいて太鼓で街からたたき出す」
「勝った――ほうが――王冠を――もらうんですか？」と
アリスはがんばって聞いてみましたが、走っているせいで、かなり息がきれていました。

≪ライオンとユニコーン≫
The Lion And The Unicorn,Were fighting for the crown.
The lion beat the unicorn,All around the town.
Some gave them white bread,And some gave them brown.
Some gave them plum cake,Then drummed them out of town．
獅子と一角獣 王冠かけて戦った。
獅子は一角獣を まちじゅう 追ってやっつけた。
町の人々白パンをやり、黒パンをやり、
プラムケーキやり、どっちも町から 追いだした。
 ライオンはイングランドの紋章 ユニコーンはスコットランドの紋章です。
このナーサリーライムは、1603年にスコットランドのジェームズ6世が、イギリスのジェームス1世となったとき
両国の紋章を組み合わせたことを歌っているそうです。
   
写真はロンドンバッキンガム宮殿の周辺の門につけられたライオンとユニコーンのパターン、バッキンガム宮殿のショップで買った絵皿、ラグビースタジアムのライオン像。
Twikenham Stadium の金のライオンは、まるでイングランドの守り神にふさわしく雄雄しさと優しさ漂わせていました。
